Susannah passed this blog award meme to me a few weeks ago.
I'm to tell you ten things about me that you might not know already and pass on the award. I feel like I just did this, and you may be getting bored, but I guess blogging is by definition self-centered.
I'm supposed to choose 10 recipients, but as Susannah noted, this quickly creates a mathematical problem in that after 6 rounds of peer-award giving the entire blogging population will be exhausted. So I'm selecting some Self-Stitched September Sewing Sisters:
The last couple weeks, I leaked a couple things about myself. Like:
1) I don't like making phone calls. Perhaps this is because, growing up, we were on a party line with about 6 other families and you never knew who would be listening in. But definitely my grandmother, who was not a very nice person, was often tapping in on our conversations.
Post 911- when phones were tapped based on the use of certain words--I liked to randomly use the words "bomb" or "explosives" just to keep the telephone interesting .
2) I am a materialist. I really like stuff like vintage dishes, yarn, fabric, books, and buttons. I have four functioning sewing machines. I feel a bit guilty about this.
Here's some other stuff:
3)I have a lot of small sets of dishes that I pick up at thrift stores, but extremely limited cupboard space. so I seasonally rotate my tableware. I just put away my summer dishes (Blue Dream) and took out some of this:
4) I met my husband when I was 18, and married him at 24. I wore a 1950's wedding gown with not a single ruffle or bow, just pleats and simple beadwork on the bodice and a huge 8-gored flared skirt. I was a bit nervous to get married, but it made us both feel unexpectedly secure and happy.
5) I started blogging just about a year ago because my ankle was injured and I could barely move it or walk. To shift my focus off my foot, I decided to start writing about the little things that made my day.
6) I messed up my ankle doing flamenco dance, and I am thinking of starting again next week. I started 4 years ago, and had to take last year off. Which means I am still a beginner. I suck at it, but I really love it. My teacher is a goddess.
7) I prefer potato chips to chocolate.
8) In college, I majored in Classics--a mistake.
9) I am a compulsive list-maker. Almost every day I make a list of things I NEED to do. Then other things seem to happen and I don't do many things on the list. Or it takes me several hours longer to do things than I anticipated.
So that I always have something crossed off (which I do with big thick lines) I usually write down a couple things I have already done. Like: GET DRESSED or MAKE BREAKFAST. I have a fantasy that one day, I will cross everything off. I also realize I would have to have a pretty boring life to ever do that.
10) Although I lose things constantly, I think I'm charmed because most everything comes back to me. A couple years ago, my purse was stolen with cash, credit cards, a check book and an antique amber necklace in it. Two months later the woman who had taken it brought it to our house, rang the door bell and told my husband (who was home ) that she wanted me to have it back. She appeared to be living in her car and had only taken 20.00 for gas. My husband gave her another 40.00 as a "reward." Some people think he was crazy to reward the thief, but I think it must have taken incredible courage and a real sense of accountability to return it. I think I might have done the same, but I'm not sure, because it was such a hassle to cancel my credit card and close my checking account out. What would your impulse have been?
